I was rear-ended about two weeks ago sitting at a red light. My car didn’t survive, but luckily I did. Like most people, this incident caused me to go into deep reflection. It’s fascinating, because a week ago, I wrote about pain being an agent for change. In my case, the pain is physical right now with a sore stiff neck, backache and hamstring discomfort to prove it.
I was walking on Monday, one of the activities that the doctor says I can still do and an interesting thought came up. I was rear-ended several years ago sitting at a red light, which prompted me to buy a new car. And now 11-years later, I’m basically in the same situation.
For the most part, I think of myself as someone who is receptive to change. When I felt the urge to leave corporate America, I did and started my own business. I had some success as a Learning and Development Consultant and realized, I’m being led to be a coach. So I enrolled in a coach training program. I guess I can say that when it comes to business, I’m quite receptive to change. It’s personally where I’m noticing resistance.
I had a plan and timetable for buying a new car. It would happen on December 31, 2017. By that time, I would have saved enough money to pay for the car in cash. Well that timetable is wiped out! So now, I’m faced with buying a new car today without my well-defined plan.
My first thought was to stick to the original strategy and just buy a “get-around” car until 2017. Then I talked to one of my friends. She said, “What do you really want?” I realized that although I dream big, I haven’t set enough belief in motion to make some of those dreams come true.
I’m a planner. Everything has a timeframe. Everything has a place. Everything should be in its place. Well, life doesn’t work according to my plan or timetable. Sometimes the plan is for me to go with the way life is flowing right now.
This is different for me. But if I am going to have a catchphrase that says: “Helping you move to your next BIG THING!” I have to be prepared to move to my next BIG THING as well.
So today, I am off to look for a new car! Wish me luck!
Whatever you do, keep moving to your next BIG THING. It could be right now!
