I was walking this morning and the power of a hug came into my spirit. I immediately thought about my two nephews - Zy & Ky. They give the best hugs! When they were very little boys, they’d walk up to you, put their arms around your neck, lay their head on your shoulder and give you the warmest, sweetest hug. It literally melted my heart every time they did it. It was the first time I realized just how powerful a hug can be.
Some studies say that hugs are anti-depressants. They say when we hug someone, oxytocin (oxy-toe-sin) is released into our bodies. Oxytocin is a hormone made in the brain and released by the pituitary gland.
During labor, large amounts of oxytocin are released into a woman’s body to help facilitate childbirth. After the baby is born, oxytocin is secreted during breastfeeding. It’s sometimes called the “facilitator of life.”
Hugs Bring Life!
If oxytocin is a “facilitator of life” that means that hugs are a bringer, sustainer and transformer of life.
My Challenge to You!
Dear Reader: Spread some oxytocin in the world! Go hug someone! Hug someone and watch the stress go away…your spirits lift…and your mind become at ease. Watch your excitement sky rocket…your heart flutter. It’s the “love hormone…hug hormone and cuddle chemical.” You don’t need a prescription for it. The cost is free and the benefits are AMAZING!
