When most of you read the title The State of “Your” Union, you probably thought about our country, which makes sense. Every year, the President of the United States gives a message where he describes the condition of the country. He outlines the biggest opportunities facing the nation and appeals to Congress about key areas to focus on for the next year.
Well, what if you took your life and did something similar. Instead of looking at The State of "the" Union, you might look at The State of “Your” Union. How would you describe the condition of your life right now? What are the biggest opportunities that you're facing? What do you want to focus on for the next 30-60-90 days? What about the next year?
In As a Man Thinketh, James Allen says: “All that a man achieves or fails to achieve is the direct result of his thoughts.” If this is true, wherever you are in your life right now and wherever you go forward is highly dependent on your thoughts.
Sometimes, it's easier to figure out what you feel and then connect your thoughts and actions back to them, so let’s start there. What you think is connected to how you feel. If you feel angry, you think angry thoughts and do things that angry people do. If you change what you think, you change how you feel. If you change how you feel, you change what you do. If you change your actions, you change your world and the world of those around you.
Mahatma Gandhi said:
"Your beliefs become your thoughts. Your thoughts become your words. Your words become your actions. Your actions become your habits. Your habits become your values. Your values become your destiny.”
In other words, your thoughts create your reality. If you believe you can do something, you can. If you don’t, you won’t. Your thoughts are powerful and can have either a positive or undesirable impact on your life. The good news is that you have a choice…a choice in what you think…how you feel…and in the outcomes that happen in your life.
The human brain is adaptable, dynamic and capable of rewiring. Most of us aren’t born thinking:
We are oftentimes programmed to think this way by ourselves or others. Anything that is programmed can also be re-programmed. In Latin, “re” means “again” or “again and again”. What that says is that you can change what you think. Disciplining your thoughts takes time and commitment, but it can be done.
Do it again… and then again… and then again… and then again…until you get what you want!
